A Habitat For Las Cruces Birds and Others

Greetings Bird Lovers, and everyone else who happens upon this site!  For those of you who might not live in this state, Las Cruces is in New Mexico.

To be totally honest right from the start, I want to tell you that I am going to ask you to donate at this site to help up keep feeding the birds.  We moved to Las Cruces in March, 2023, and started sprinkling tiny amounts of wild bird seed in the back yard to watch them feed.  We didn’t guess at the time it was going to explode in population, and we are now using 360 pounds of seed per month, and climbing.  Once I got started, I couldn’t stop, but we’re running out of money.  This is an appeal strictly to bird lovers, who I know will understand why I can’t stop now that I’ve gotten in so deep.  We get a thousand birds a day (at least) in the back yard, and have eight bird baths to keep them drinking and bathing.  We were told that birds in Las Cruces are having a rough time finding food.

If you can find it in your heart to donate any amount from $1 to $5, I would appreciate it, and will be able to keep this cherished activity going.  We are not a company, and do not have “non-profit” status… I tried that once with a ministry I founded in 1983, and the government made it too difficult.  So, since money wasn’t the goal, I didn’t bother.  If I can get $400/month, or even half that, I’ll turn off the donate button for that month.  I don’t want any more than I can get for bird seed.  I’m sure only true bird lovers will understand this, so I hope I’m reaching some of you now.

This site is here because I love birds.  I don’t know why I love birds so much, but it may have something to do with the fact there have been birds in my life since I was three years old. Mom and Dad had a parakeet. Then Mom and her second husband had three parakeets over the years.  I realized early on how very intelligent birds are from these early interactions with them.

From my college years on I have dreamed about birds.  I had a dream one night that I was walking up a very long flight of steps outside a country courthouse, which was lined by dozens of small trees, each with hundreds of birds in them, all tweeting directly to me.  Another night I dreamt I was buying a house which had hundreds of birds on the lawn, and in the trees in the front yard.  Again, they were all tweeting directly to me. I realized at one point several of them were sitting on my shoulders.

Never have I understood the meanings of these dreams, but I have always loved birds.  At one time in my life my wife and I had four parakeets flying around the house at their own discretion… even joining us at the supper table, where they would hop onto our plates and help themselves to some mashed potatoes.

[NOTE]:  Some of my friends might not understand my fascination with birds.  I’m a former Marine – combat with a Purple Heart. I was a boxer and bully-crusher in my high-school days.

Anyway, my wife and I moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 2023.  We have always loved the desert, and decided to get a house here to live out our retirement years.  The mountains here are breathtaking, and the healing waters of mineral hot springs are an hour away.

Shortly after we moved in, I noticed all the birds here.  Then I decided to get a small bag of seed from Walmart, and sprinkle some on the wall behind the house, like so.

Seeing the success of adding seeds to the wall gave me the inspiration to add a bird bath to the back yard.  Not knowing much about them, I searched the web until I found this one
